About Crow Valley Forge! (About the artist/craftsman, Kevin Salonek)
In memory of my Grandfather, Louis P Salonek , who ran his Smithy on the banks of the Crow River Valley in central Minnesota. An "Honest days work for an honest wage" he always said. Since a tot in the coal bin, this kid grew up as a traditional Smithy. My Grandfathers motto for me was 'Can't say Can't' and it stuck. Continuing old country ideas, America brought promise and integrity to family craftsmanship! As a particular fondness of mine is Bladesmithing, and it has been a life endeavor to pursue that dream-blade. With the invention of the internet and the ability to share ideas, and friends like Ed Fowler and Rex Walters, sharing there ideas for 'Excalibur', literally decades have been shaved off that pursuit! Came close Over a decade ago, working as an Aircraft Mechanic, and replacing one of the worlds largest production propeller blades on an ATR-72 with a friend / fellow Bladesmith. We stumbled upon a discarded 52100 bearing race, large enough to fit over a man's knee, as we discussed the possibilities of the knife it would make, time constraints and duty called louder. So happens that Ed Fowler and Rex Walters were already on it! We had no idea how far they took it. Ed was smashing 3" ball-bearings into his famous Ram-Horn handled knives , You also may know of Ed as a Writer for Blade Magazine, Publishing his results, Rex Walters dropped the dime on his find. Rex is sitting on tons of virgin 52100 'Ball-Bearing' steel, Ed and Rex combined, truly pioneered some of the finest break thoughts in mans oldest invention. 52100 is a Bladesmith's dream, the world literally revolves around it, Trains, Planes and Automobiles would not be the same with out it. From the bearings in you car/truck and boat/horse trailer. Bearings keeping jet engines spinning at speeds over 44,000 RPM's . To trains rolling along with extremely heavy loads. All would not be possible with out 52100 . Since the early 1900's , Ball Bearing steel has constantly improved, but has never been replaced. Take the worlds most demanding metals, and forge that into mans oldest tools, and it's like a match made in heaven! Crow Valley Forge is dedicated to the art of forging blades and Bladesmithing, one blade at a time. Thank you for stopping by, and giving us a chance to introduce ourselves. If your compelled , let us forge one for you!. |
